Building your own home can be a dream or a nightmare

For the past 20 years, I’ve been designing a home that I want to one day build. I tweak the home plans, save my money, and picture the home I will one day be able to build. My father is a brick layer who had a similar dream. His recent experience building his own home taught me that building your own home can actually be a nightmare. He wanted to be his own builder, has over 25 years in the trades, and was as prepared as anyone to be an owner builder.
Long story short, when I do build my own home, I’m going to purchase a customized home package from a company that handles the basics, and I’ll get my hands dirty doing the finish work. Be your own builder sounds great, until you venture into construction fields you don’t have experience with.
